“We’re talking about a group of people at the mercy of the wind and the rain. It felt so natural that we would just allow the piece to sort of exist in an honest space. This is not a population of people wallowing. With the pre-show you feel that energy. It’s being reconstructed and it’s being lived in and it’s devastated, not devastating. The original design was sort of wallowing in a sense of destruction, as though something had just befallen this theater. After our trip, we got away from there and thought, ‘That’s not quite it. The country doesn’t feel victimized. It feels vibrant and amazing.’ I think we had sort of misunderstood that. Rather than a feeling of “What do we do?,” the space began to convey a feeling of “Life goes on.“”
