Hello! I’m taking French this year, and seeing as you’re in France, I was wondering if there was any way to get some French Speaking tips? (I’m a large fan of your writing, it’s what brought me to your blog originally, and I cannot wait for the next chapter of the Spiderman AU that I saw recently you haven’t given up on! ❤️)

ahhh, thanks!! and yes! i am in france atm!! i do have some tips!

lol, honestly? my biggest tip is to just talk. all the time. however much you know. even if you know you’re saying it wrong, or have to substitute every other word for what it is in english, just attempt. because getting comfortable making mistakes is such a large battle [that tbh i’ve been living here a month and i still haven’t gotten over that and it’s starting to be a huge hindrance to my learning] and honestly it doesn’t even matter how shitty your grammar is most of the time, because as long as you can get your point across you’re already halfway there.

my favorite way of learning french is to find someone who speaks french but doesn’t speak english. my host family has a babysitter who speaks very very very little english, but it’s so fun to have her practice asking me questions in english while i attempt to respond in french. you feel infinitely less judged when the person you’re talking with is directly, actively, and immediately aware of how difficult it is to speak another language.

granted, that’s a lot harder to find if you’re not studying in a francophone country. in which case- [idk if ur college or high school, but either way] i’d take time after class to talk to your professor/teacher in french!!! go to their office hours and just tell them you want to practice talking. if you’re in college, talk with the TA in french! you can even search online and find a french buddy and facetime/chat with them!!

a good thing to remember is to swap ur positions: when someone speaks broken english to you, do you judge them? no!! (at least- i hope you dont). you just admire how awesome it is that they’re trying!! that’s probably how they feel about you, too. so don’t feel like an idiot if u feel like you only know like. ten words (like me haha)

bon courage!! j’éspere que tu parles cette langue couramment quand tu finis ton cours de français!! ce n’est pas facile mais c’est possible (relativement, mdr)!! si tu as besoin d’aide, n’hésites pas demander moi
