I am standing on the beach
And the sand will outlast me.
Fog, like an early morning horn,
Drips down the shore, waiting
For the day to burn it up.
The sea holds my ankles, rubs my knees, then consumes me,
And an early bird bears witness on the water,
Its shrill cries swallowed by
This unrepentant ocean in my ears.
Down here I am become only the rocks
Sunken in my brimming pocket.
They bring me down to salted depths
And leave me silent, dark, and free. The Gulls || Emma-Lee M.
